The Foundations of Building a Business

Aaron: Description of the show.

-How this show was started – a way for us to continue the business discussions we used to have over wings and beer when we lived in the same city.

-We have some bullet points to cover, but this is supposed to be an open discussion about the foundations of a business and important things to incorporate.

Terry: Building a business means we’ve already started. That could be anywhere from having 50 employees to running a business out of you dining room nights and weekends. Do we need to take a good look at ourselves and our businesses first before we begin to build?

A: Hugely important and not just self reflection but letting others give us the feedback and being a big enough person to take the comments we don’t like and own them. SWOT Analysis.

Aaron: What do you think about a business that looks around, sees a business they like, and then attempt to exactly duplicate the model?

A: Understanding your competitors is one thing, but trying to be like them is a waste of time, energy and money. Everyone is different and you need to focus your actions on your strengths.

Terry: You’ve talked on this show many times about a business plan. Talk to us about the importance and how the heck do we accomplish the task?

A: This is the work on your business part. It’s a little bit of strategy type stuff, but really about planning the implementation. Doesn’t have to be a big pretty full-color doc. Working, active, changing and used by ALL.

Aaron: Let’s talk about building the image the customer sees. I assume we’ll be talking a little social media here.

Terry: How do we measure our success?
